Amazon.com Review
It would probably take something the size of the Encyclopedia Britannica to fully explain the persona, the personality, and the phenomenon of NBA bad boy Dennis Rodman, but Dan Bickley, a staff writer for the Chicago Sun-Times, at least gets a fast break on the explanation in No Bull: The Unauthorized Biography of Dennis Rodman. The Rodman that emerges from Bickley's search is intriguing, less a colorful clown of the court than a complex antihero who--from broken-home childhood to Madonna worship to photographer-kicking, wedding-dress-wearing rebounder extraordinaire--has lived his life above the rim and consistently marched to the sound of a drummer so different that no one else could even hear the beat. "I'm not a role model," Rodman readily admits, "I'm a figment of your imagination." In No Bull, that figment is fleshed out with some solid, three-dimensional reportage, interpretation, and analysis.

From Kirkus Reviews
Bickley, a writer for the Chicago Sun-Times, offers an exasperated overview of the controversial Rodman's life, concentrating on the power forward's recent career and off-court hijinks. It's a brisk narrative, enlivened by quotes (many of them tackily highlighted in large type) from Rodman's colleagues and ertswhile friends. The problem is that those fascinated by Rodman's perpetual jousting with Chicago Bulls management, the cross- dressing, the very public affair with Madonna, and the on-court antics (head-butting an official, kicking a photographer) are likely to remain unswayed by Bickley's contention that Rodman, far from being out of control, has been deftly manipulating the media and fans, while those likely to agree with him would find this expos‚ unnecessary. The Cartoon History of the Universe III: From the Rise of Arabia to the Renaissance (Cartoon History of the Modern World)By Larry Gonick

An irreverent survey in comics spanning world history from the birth of Islam to the Byzantine Empire to the Italian Renaissance.

Larry Gonick's celebrated series The Cartoon History of the Universe is a unique fusion of world history and the comics medium, a work of serious scholarship and a masterpiece of popular literature. Praised by Jonathan Spence in the New York Times Book Review as "a curious hybrid, at once flippant and scholarly, witty and politically correct, zany and traditionalist," Gonick's clever illustrations deliver important information with a deceptively light tone, teaching us about the people and events that have shaped our world. This long-awaited new volume covers the Middle Ages around the globe, including the multicultural Middle East, West Africa and the cross-Saharan trade, Central Asia and the Byzantine Empire, the European Dark Ages and the Crusades, the Mongol conquests, the Black Death, the Ottoman Empire, the Italian Renaissance, and the rise of Spain, leading up to Columbus's departure for the new world. Gonick offers an historical survey that is at once multicultural, humanistic, skeptical, and laugh-out-loud funny.

From Publishers Weekly
The second volume of Gonick's deeply researched, lucid and hilarious overview of history was published eight years ago. Good things take time, evidently. This third installment begins in the year 395, with the closing of Europe's pagan temples, and ends in 1492, with Columbus and crew setting sail. Readers get an overview of nearly everything that occurred between those two events, from the origins of Islam to the great Chinese dynasties and the Crusades, with "flashbacks" to the rise of African culture, the Turco-Mongol tribes and more. Gonick's take on history is whip-smart, skeptical about familiar but questionable stories and absolutely in command of dozens of simultaneous historical threads. He's also very funny, even at his most respectful. (In the chapter on the life of Muhammad, for instance, he makes a running joke of keeping the prophet permanently off-panel.) Gonick is fond of wacky little digressions, and the book includes plenty of learned slapstick (one ongoing gag concerns the "amazing amount of eye-gouging" in Byzantine history). The architecture and clothes in Gonick's work are drawn with convincing realism, but the people are broad, goofy caricatures, which somehow makes the entire presentation even friendlier: in fact, the author employs a handful of walk-ons disheveled, mustachioed academic types to explain the more complicated points.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-This clever, wickedly funny book begins with the birth of Islam, steps back for an overview of the history of Africa, jumps to Turkey and China, peeks at the Dark Ages in Europe, heads back to the Middle East for the Crusades, and wraps up with Christopher Columbus heading west. Gonick has a knack for finding intriguing bits of history that tend to be overlooked in conventional texts and reporting them with irreverent humor, as with the story of the group of Meccans who visited a cathedral in Ethiopia and left an unusual calling card. ("&*%$# pagans pooped in my church!" the king complains to the Islamic missionaries.) The book is a mixture of careful research and quips, often dwelling on the irony of people's actions versus their stated beliefs. The black-and-white art is energetic, sometimes spare, but generally evocative of time and place. Highly entertaining.

From Library Journal
Gonick is a veritable industry, having produced cartoon guides to such wide-ranging subjects as physics, sex, U.S. history, and two previous collections of his Cartoon History of the Universe. His work combines extensive research with two excellent teaching tools: pictures and humor. This volume begins with the founding of Islam in the early 600s and ends with Columbus's departure from Spain in 1492. In addition to covering Charlemagne, the Battle of Hastings, the Crusades, and Joan of Arc, it takes in much that is less widely known in America, including histories of the Byzantine Empire, the Turks, India, and more. Though this volume is not as funny as the previous two, Gonick maintains a light tone throughout the unending cycles of invasion, social decay, and religious warfare. As the title suggests, Gonick's figures are cartoony, but his renderings of ancient art and architecture are detailed and realistic. A long, annotated bibliography rounds out the book. The frank nature of Gonick's comments (and jokes) relating to sex make this for adult collections. An excellent example of the educative potential of comics, this history is highly recommended.

Review

"Winner of the 2011 Euler Book Prize, Mathematical Association of America""One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Titles for 2009""Honorable Mention for the 2008 PROSE Award for Single Volume Reference/Science, Association of American Publishers""The Princeton Companion to Mathematics makes a heroic attempt to keep [abstract concepts] to a minimum . . . and conveys the breadth, depth and diversity of mathematics. It is impressive and well written and it's good value for [the] money."---Ian Stewart, The Times"This is a panoramic view of modern mathematics. It is tough going in some places, but much of it is surprisingly accessible. A must for budding number-crunchers." (The Economist)"Although the editors' original goal of text that could be understood by anyone with a good background in high school mathematics provided short-lived, this wide-ranging account should reward undergraduate and graduate students and anyone curious about math as well as help research mathematicians understand the work of their colleagues in other specialties. The editors note some advantages a carefully organized printed reference may enjoy over a collection of Web pages, and this impressive volume supports their claim." (Science)"This impressive book represents an extremely ambitious and, I might add, highly successful attempt by Timothy Gowers and his coeditors, June Barrow-Green and Imre Leader, to give a current account of the subject of mathematics. It has something for nearly everyone, from beginning students of mathematics who would like to get some sense of what the subject is all about, all the way to professional mathematicians who would like to get a better idea of what their colleagues are doing. . . . If I had to choose just one book in the world to give an interested reader some idea of the scope, goals and achievements of modern mathematics, without a doubt this would be the one. So try it. I guarantee you'll like it!" (American Scientist)"Accessible, technically precise and thorough account of all math's major aspects. Students of math will find this book a helpful reference for understanding their classes; students of everything else will find helpful guides to understanding how math describes it all."---Tom Siegfried, Science News"Once in a while a book comes along that should be on every mathematician's bookshelf. This is such a book. Described as a 'companion', this 1000-page tome is an authoritative and informative reference work that is also highly pleasurable to dip into. Much of it can be read with benefit by undergraduate mathematicians, while there is a great deal to engage professional mathematicians of all persuasions."---Robin Wilson, London Mathematical Society"Imagine taking an overview of elementary and advanced mathematics, a history of mathematics and mathematicians, and a mathematical encyclopedia and combining them all into one comprehensive reference book. That is what Timothy Gowers, the 1998 Fields Medal laureate, has successfully accomplished in compiling and editing The Princeton Companion to Mathematics. At more than 1,000 pages and with nearly 200 entries written by some of the leading mathematicians of our time and specialists in their fields, this book is a one-of-a-kind reference for all things mathematics." Katz, professor emeritus, University of the District of Columbia"I think that this is a wonderful book, completely different from anything that has been written before about mathematics and mathematicians."--Endre Süli, University of Oxford"The Princeton Companion to Mathematics is a much needed--and will become a much used--reference work. I love this book. I have the paper and kindle versions because they complement each other. It is because of books like this that make me eschew TV so I can buy more books. Don't try to understand everything the first time around, just read it and wonder at how many smart people there are and why you never seem to get to meet them. This book delivers shock and awe for people who like to think. There are no exercises to make you feel guilty about not doing them.

This wonderful volume is one of four works I always keep in digital or desk drawer reach while reading/studying/ referencing any other math book or journal article, the complete list being:-- Encyclopedia Of Mathematics (Science Encyclopedia)-- The Princeton Companion to Mathematics-- Handbook of Mathematical Functions: with Formulas, Graphs, and Mathematical Tables (Dover Books on Mathematics)-- NIST Handbook of Mathematical Functions (Being of course the 2010 update of the Abramowitz classic above).Given these four, there is hardly a topic from among the current 495 math fields of study that isn't at least explained in enough detail to save LOTS of time on link expeditions. At minimum, these give head starts on alphabetized keywords that will quickly fill holes in any research project, class, or syllabus.

If you have a working math background and want to look at areas you never studied this is a great introduction. The preface says it was designed to introduce various areas of math to people with a math background in other areas. It works very well in that role. Although it displays only on my PC not on my paper-white the display is convenient and works very well. I am not a great typo hunter but have not found any.

This will keep me reading for years, and it's surprisingly well written. The problem with a book like this is that it can't really afford to go into depth (or it would grow to titanic size), but I guess that it's purpose is to expose people to interesting mathematics where they can get enough of a taste to know when to dive deeper. It does require discipline to stay on track at times, but it's worth pushing through (although I'm not finished yet).

Got my copy a week ago. What an exceptional book! Any of the random samples I read so far provides a informative, yet pleasant read. Gowers (Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics in Cambridge) did a fantastic job in editing the many articles into a coherent and surprisingly accessible overview of modern mathematics. From inception to publication of this book took Gowers and his associate editors some 6 years. The amount of editorial attention given to this publication clearly shows and translated into a book that is - unlike any other math book I know of - easy to read and of high quality. This book provides lots of material that is of interest to non-mathematicians. As is mentioned in one of the other reviews here, this heavy volume does not contain a separate chapter on mathematical physics, yet as a physicist I found lots of material directly relevant to physics. There is a very interesting chapter on the general theory of relativity, and lots of material on quantum mechanics. Also fundamental concepts highly relevant in physics such as spherical harmonics, dynamical systems, deterministic chaotic behavior, phase transitions, Lie groups, etc. are covered in inviting shorter sections. Each of the subjects is introduced in such a way that the reader first gains an intuitive understanding of the concept, that subsequently gets deepened via a more rigorous approach. If only there was a similar 'companion' to modern physics! (The book of Oxford's Emeritus Rouse Ball professor Roger Penrose, The Road to Reality: A Complete Guide to the Laws of the Universe comes close, but falls short of being truly PCM's equivalent in physics.)If you're interested in math, don't hesitate and buy this book. (And be quick: I bought it here at Amazon for just over US$71. In the meantime, the price has increased already by more than US$5... ;-)

I haven't seen the printed version of this book, but it must be huge. This books covers a lot of topics in depth and you can regard it as a complement to the online Wikipedia pages or the Mathworld pages on the same subjects. I'm very happy with it, but I can't say that I've read the whole thing. It's a reference: very few people will ever read the whole thing.I'm an ex-math major picking his way through Galois Theory thirty years after graduation (and I wander into a lot of other topics, too). That's what I use this for. It would be interesting to hear what some research mathematicians think of it.

I own both the hardbound and the Kindle versions of this book. I really like the breadth and consistency of coverage of mathematics and mathematicians. Sure there's a lot of wiki content on the net for each topic but the consistency and quality of content isn't generally found in a single resource such as The Princeton Companion. The real issue is the poor Kindle version. many graphic elements that don't resize with changes in font size in the reader, insertion of a graphic for such things as |R for the Reals instead of typesetting it, white backgrounds on images that don't work with the sepia and black backgrounds and so on.It is really terrifically annoying that time and again books with heavy mathematical content beautifully typeset in physical or print replica editions are foisted off on readers in inadequately executed eReader formats such as mobi and ePub.If you check my reviews you'll find many Kindle formatted math books reviewed of which only the print replica versions are acceptable.

Seapower: A Guide for the Twenty-First Century (Cass Series: Naval Policy and History)By Geoffrey Till

The sea has always been central to human development as a source of resources, and as a means of transportation, information-exchange and strategic dominion. It has been the basis for our prosperity and security. This is even more the case, now, in the early 21st century, with the emergence of an increasingly globalized world trading system.

Navies have always provided a way of policing, and sometimes exploiting, the system. In contemporary conditions, navies – and other forms of maritime power – are having to adapt, in order to exert the maximum power ashore in the company of others and to expand the range of their interests, activities and responsibilities. Their traditional tasks still apply but new ones are developing fast.

This updated and expanded new edition of Geoffrey Till's acclaimed book is an essential guide for students of naval history and maritime strategy, and anyone interested in the changing and crucial role of seapower in the 21st century.
