About the Author
Dr. John Bernthal is professor emeritus of Special Education and Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln. He has been a speech-language pathologist for over forty years, including employment in the public schools, at several universities, and professor and department chair for over thirty years. He conducted research, taught and published in the area of speech sounds disorders.   He is a past president of the American Speech Language Hearing Association, an ASHA Fellow, and recipient of Honors of the Association.

Dr. Nicholas Bankson is a professor emeritus at James Madison University. He has had a forty year career as a speech-language pathologist, including employment in the public schools, serving as the state supervisor of school programs in Kansas, plus twenty-seven years as a department chair in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Boston University and James Madison University. His scholarly efforts have focused on speech sound disorders and the assessment of language disorders in children. He is an ASHA Fellow, and a recipient ASHA’s Honors of the Association award.

 

Dr. Peter Flipsen Jr., is a professor of Speech-Language Pathology at Idaho State University. He has more than twenty years of experience in the field as a clinician, teacher, and researcher. He teaches courses in phonetics and speech sound disorders in children and has published more than twenty peer-reviewed journal articles in the field. His research has focused on the classification of speech sound disorders, measurement of intelligibility of speech, and speech and language development in children with cochlear implants.

Jonathan Backhouse MRes MA BA (Hons) CertEd CMIOSH, is a highly qualified teacher and Chartered Safety and Health Practitioner. Since becoming self-employed in 2002 he has gained a vast amount of health and safety experience, working as a consultant, trainer, assessor, examiner and author; working in the UK, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the USA.

Ed Ferrett is former Vice Chairman of NEBOSH (1999–2008) and a lecturer on NEBOSH courses with both public and private course providers. He is a chartered engineer and health and safety consultant.

It was purely a test machine, aimed at achieving initial experience in this unknown subject. Further efforts on autogyros were concentrated at the Experimental Aerodynamics Department of the Central Aero and Hydrodynamics Institute (TsAGI) in Moscow. A number of Soviet designers, who later became famous for their works on helicopters, were involved in solving the initial problems of autogyro development. Among them were M.L. Mil, N.I. Kamov, I.P. Bratukhin and A.M. Cheryomukhin. Up to 1939, the design group at TsAGI created nine different types of these machines, while a special rotary-wing aircraft workshop built 17 prototypes. Two autogyro types, A-4 and A-7, were built in small series, with the A-7 achieving some success in civil and military use.

In spring 1941 one A-7 was used for spraying chemicals over natural orchards in Kirghizia on the spurs of the Tien Shan mountain range. The first military trial of the A-7 was carried out during the Soviet–Finnish war in 1939–40, when the A-7bis provided correction of fire for the artillery batteries and managed to carry out 20 combat flights. With the beginning of German invasion in June 1941, the Air Force organized new courses for training A-7 aircrew and ground support staff. In August 1941, in accordance with the decision of Chief Artillery Directorate of the Red Army, on the basis of the trained flight group and five combat-ready A-7 autogyros, the 1st autogyro artillery spotting aircraft squadron was formed, which was included into the strength of the 24th Army of the VVS, combat active in the area around Elnya near Smolensk. From 30 August to 5 October 1941 the autogyros made 19 combat sorties for artillery spotting. Not one autogyro was lost in action, while the unit was disbanded in 1942 due to the shortage of serviceable aircraft.

About the Author
Mikhail Maslov was born in 1954 in Mary, Turkmenistan, at that time a part of Soviet Union. His aviation carrier started during school years when he got interested in aviation history and began building airplane models. Mikhail graduated from Moscow Aviation Institute (University) and worked as an engineer at Tupolev Design Bureau, participating in the development of Tu-204 airliner, and later at Central Aero and Hydrodynamics Institute (TsAGI) as researcher. However, his passion for aviation history prevailed and in 1992 he transferred to TsaGI museum in Moscow where he started his historical research. Since the beginning of the 1990s Mikhail has been actively involved in the restoration of Soviet aircraft to flying condition, and has participated in building I-153, I-16, MiG-3 and Po-2 planes. He has written more than 20 books and a large number of articles on the history of early Soviet aviation, which have been published in Russia as well as in the UK, France, Germany, and USA. Mikhail has three children and lives in Moscow.
